Any book lover will tell you how nice it is to curl up with a good read. It’s both relaxing and stimulating at once. You come away feeling so much better than you feel after watching television or spending time online.
No one has completely put their finger on the reasons why, but nobody denies that reading is good for your intellectual development. That is in stark contrast to television, which may lead to a lower IQ and decreases your ability to concentrate. Videos can be somewhat stimulating, if you choose a good one. Surfing the internet is neither relaxing nor is it as good as reading for your mental health.
The value of reading or looking at still photographs lies in the fact that you become more actively involved in what you’re doing. When you are reading, your mind picks its pace and becomes more and more deeply focused and active as you become involved in your reading material. When you are reading online, your mind becomes jumpy and unfocused as you go from application to application.
You do get focused and absorbed when you watch TV, but it is a passive focus, almost as if you have been hypnotized. The kind of trance that reading puts you into is an active trance that stimulates the imaginative centers of your brain (your right brain) as well as the intellectual centers (your left brain).
Still photographs have a similar effect on the mind. With videos, your mind is being taken from scene to scene rapidly, while pictures make your mind imagine what is going to happen next.
Nobody is saying that you have to always read deep, intellectual books or look at photographic masterpieces. Whatever the genre, words and still pictures are often better than videos. Try looking at the pictures in Taylor Timms’ Book of Beautiful Breasts Pictures for proof of this. All this photographic collection has are dozens of pictures of hot girls in bikinis, but it’s so much more of a turn-on that erotic videos, it’s not funny.
